Seagate hard drives turn into spy machines!

Seagate hard drives turn into spy machines
What a wizard wheeze
By Nick Farrell: Monday, 12 November 2007, 8:14 AM
SEAGATE hard-drives, made in Thailand, are having trojan horse software pre-loaded, possibly in a spy effort by the Chinese government.
The Taiwanese Investigation Bureau claims that the Maxtor Basics 500G discs, which are used by government agencies, have been found to contain Trojan horse viruses that automatically upload to Beijing websites.
So far more than 1,800 of the portable Maxtor hard discs, carried two Trojan horse viruses: autorun.inf and ghost.pif.
The sites that the hard-drives call up and upload their data to are www.nice8.org and www.we168.org.
The attack is unusual, which leads the TIB to think that the Chinese government is involved.
Recently, the Chinese government has run an aggressive interweb spying programme in Taiwan.
The bureau has ordered the product's Taiwanese distributor, Xander International, to take the hard-drives from the shelves.
Xander told the Chinese-language Liberty Times that the company had sold 1,800 tainted discs to stores last month.
Seagate's Asian Pacific branch said it was investigating.

ATI HD3850 and HD3870 will finally be quiet to fight against nvidia!

HD3850 and HD3870 will finally be quiet

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/11/08/hd3850-3870-finally-quiet
THE RADEON HD 3850 will come to market with a single-slot cooling setup, outputting only 31 dBA.
This is closer to silence than 8600GTS or 8800GT, boards with which this card will undoubtedly be compared.
Meet mr. 31 dBA... quiet as a mouse
Daamit poured scorn on Nvidia for its noisy GeForce FX 5800 only to release a series of relatively noisy cards itself, starting with the Radeon X850, continuing with X1800 and X1900, and coming to market with 2900XT - yet another fine noisy product.
For its part, Nvidia had the FX5950 (quieter than the hairdryer FX5800), the not-so-noisy 6800 Ultra, the relatively-quiet 7800 and 7900 series, and continued its quiet approach with the massive 8800GTX and Ultra boards.
Taking dual-slot configuration resulted in meeting with mr. 34 dBA
But now Daamit is to deliver its first ever sub-45dBA cards.
A Radeon HD 3870 will follow with a dual-slot cooling setup, heatpipes and everything. This setup will output 34 dBA, more than 3850, but drastically less than 2900XT or a direct competitor, GeForce 8800GT.
According to our data, 8800GT produces 43 dBA of ambient noise, and during our testing, Gainward, XFX and Zotac all had similarly tuned fans, quite loud ones - once that 3D load ramps up, that is. ยต

GPhone from Google

Google phone (GPhone) rumors
Friday, November 2, 2007

LinuxDevices.org:"Google’s first mobile phone will run a Linux operating system on a Texas Instruments "Edge" chipset, and will likely ship to T-Mobile and Orange customers in the Spring of 2008, according to unconfirmed reports. "GPhone" call minutes and text messages reportedly will be funded by mobile advertising…News of the so-called "GPhone" or "G-Phone" broke quietly about two weeks ago in the island nation of Singapore, where Jennifer Tan of Reuters subsidiary Anian Research filed a report on July 12.

Tan cited "industry sources," "U.S. sources," and "manufacturing and component supply chain sources" in backing her assertion that after year-long delays finding a manufacturer, Google contracted Taiwan-based smartphone maker High Tech Computer (HTC) to design its phone hardware. HTC is best-known for its Windows Mobile smartphones, however, and Tan offered no conjecture about who might supply the phone’s Linux-based operating system.

PS2 for USD$100 in near future

Sony said to have sub-$100 PS2 in the pipeline

Sony's saying nothing, but online reports suggests the consumer electronics giant is readying a further incarnation of the PS2 that's set to ship in the States next year for under $100.

According to a report published by games industry trade paper MCV, the third-generation PS2 will be more compact than the current 'slim' model and see the power brick moved inside the casing.
It claimed the machine will retail Stateside for $99 - the current version costs $129 - and over here for around £75 - 20 quid less than today's £95 RRP.
It's suggested the new PS2 won't appear until 2008. If so, Sony clearly doesn't want it to hinder PS3 sales this coming Christmas. But Sony last week said it expects to sell around 12m more PS2 worldwide in the five months to the end of March 2008, and the new, cheaper model could well be how it plans to meet that target.
